# What is the difference between a mainland and a freezone company?

A mainland company can operate anywhere, including with office space on the mainland, while a freezone company is traditionally limited to operating within free zones. So long as your business is service based, you will be able to service the UAE with a freezone company with no issues.

With certain freezones, you can also obtain government permission to open an office in the mainland.

If however you require a physical premises, such as for a Salon or Shop, this would require a mainland company.

Mainland companies are also required for certain industries like real estate and education which require additional government department approval.

Free zone companies can claim exemptions on qualifying income for the 9% corporate tax, paying only on UAE-sourced income.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.cavenwell.ae/what-is-the-difference-between-a-mainland-and-a-freezone-company.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
